The Laurel Gators found themselves playing an unexpected home playoff game as a result of the Chagrin Falls victory last week over Orange High School who was a higher seed in the district tournament. Laurel and Chagrin Falls have not squared off in recent memory and have played very few common opponents so picking a favorite prior to the game was difficult. The first half ended scoreless with possession and control clearly in Laurel's favor but the Gators unable to crack the 5-6 defenders packed in near the box. Chagrin's only signficant chance was a break-away early in the game that was blocked by a charging Christina Steele. The second half began to look much the same until the ice was finally broken by Junior defender Nicole Felice who came flying into the box on a Mia Mastroianni corner kick and scored on a header worthy of ESPN plays of the week. A short time later Mastroianni was able to take a feed from fellow senior Sydney Riddle, avoid the final defender, and beat the Chagrin keeper. Laurel continued to pressure but failed to convert some excellent chances later in the game that preserved the final score at 2-0 with the defense recording their 7th shutout of the season. Laurel now moves on to the District final game against Revere High School at Revere on Thursday night at 7pm.
