Buford’s shot lifts Buchtel: High school roundup

Sophomore guard Alexis Buford's basket with seven seconds remaining gave host Buchtel a 55-53 victory over Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in a nonleague girls basketball game Monday night.

The Griffins (1-2) had three players score in double figures, with seniors Daishani Williams getting 15 points and Cherlynn Maddox scoring 14. Sophomore center Charnae Coleman had 12 points and Buford scored six.

The Royals (1-2), with Katie Defer leading all scorers with 18 points, missed an attempt to tie the game at the buzzer.

No. 19 Firestone 100, Garfield 35: The Falcons built a 56-19 lead at halftime to easily handle the host Rams (3-2, 2-1) in the Akron City Series.

Junior guard Imani Gordon had a triple double with 32 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals. Sophomore guard Shaia Horton had 18 points and eight assists for the undefeated Falcons (4-0, 3-0).

Kenmore 51, Ellet 17: The Cardinals (3-1) had little trouble taking care of the Orangemen (1-4) in the Akron City Series.

Senior guard Shanequa Williams led the winners with 25 points, 10 steals and seven rebounds.

Beaumont 68, Warren JFK 45: The host Blue Streaks (1-3) notched their first win of the season as sophomore Annie Bova and Tess Gladstone each had 15 points.

Senior forward Olivia Fiorilli had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the winners.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Horizon Science 65, Grand River 62: Junior guard Verdell Lyde's two free throws with four seconds remaining capped his eight-point night as the visiting Dragons (2-0) held off Grand River Academy (0-2). Senior forward Phil Taylor paced Horizon with 19 points.
