The sting of last year's season-ending playoff loss to Gilmour was undoubtedly on the mind of the Gators players as the whistle blew for tonight's regular season game at Gilmour Academy. Laurel lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision in last year's playoffs after a 3-2 win in the regular season. The games between these schools over the past 3 years have been ties or decided by only 1 goal on each occasion so the former division 3 rivals know each other well. Tonights rematch featured solid field play and plenty of fouls but in the end Gilmour simply had no answer for the Gator's Sydney Riddle. The senior striker scored all 5 of the Laurel goals on break-aways, a free kick, a punt from the goal keeper, and simple speed and power. Assists came from fellow Senior Captain Mia Mastroianni (2) and Junior Captain Nicole Felice (1) who has been outstanding in the center back position this season. Defensively the night belonged to Freshman goal keeper Christina Steele who came out srong to stop a number of Gilmour advances from becoming shots on goal and made an incredible save on a PK at a key point in the game. Coach Tibi Regele also cited Junior midfielders Emma Evans and Hayley Donohue and Freshman Sammi Riddle as key contributors to the possession advantage and results enjoyed by the Gators during the second half. The next test for the 3-0 Gators comes Thursday against Cleveland Heights H.S. at the Laurel Butler Campus.
