Bucks top Bay, win volleyball district: HS Roundup

Buckeye's volleyball team overcame an 11-4 deficit in the fifth game Thursday night to claim an improbable Division II district championship win over top-seeded Bay.

Game scores were 25-15, 18-25, 23-25, 25-20, 16-14.

Senior middle hitter Marah Farage tallied nine service points, 20 kills, 17 digs and 16 blocks. Senior setter Kara Joyce had nine points, 53 assists and 13 digs, and junior outside hitter Samantha Mueller posted 18 kills and 21 digs.

Buckeye, which is seeded second, improves to 23-2. Bay ends its season at 23-2.

Cuyahoga Heights 3, Mogadore 0

The Redskins coasted in a Division IV district semifinal at Medina.

Game scores were 25-16, 25-11, 25-19.

Senior outside hitter Lexi Matt recorded eight service points, two aces, 12 kills and 16 digs. Senior libero Nicolette Kaliszewski contributed 17 service points, five aces and 17 digs. Senior setter Heidi Mervar had six kills and 23 assists.

Cuyahoga Heights, the No. 1 seed, improved to 21-3. Mogadore is 14-11.

Stow 3, Boardman 2

Junior defensive specialist Erin Wright came up with a handful of pivotal digs in game five to save Bulldogs rallies and secure the upset.

The Division I district final was tight the entire way, with Stow edging top-seeded Boardman, 21-25, 29-27, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13.

Stow (14-11) was led by junior outside hitter Jackie Close, who tallied 13 kills. Junior defensive specialist Paige Garrison had 16 digs and sophomore Kelly Vitt had 44 assists.

Boardman ends its season at 19-6.

Magnificat 3, North Royalton 1

The Blue Streaks rebounded after dropping the first set to claim a Division I district championship in a final featuring the top two seeds.

Game scores were 19-25, 25-10, 25-21, 25-21.

Junior outside hitter and Duke recruit Brittney Balser had 20 kills for top-seeded Magnificat (22-3). Senior outside hitter Danielle McQuade added 13 kills and 11 digs. Senior libero Catie Lambert had 34 digs.

North Royalton closes its season at 18-6.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph 3, Independence 2

Junior middle hitter Shayla Lang collected 15 kills and six blocks as the top-seeded Vikings edged No. 3 Independence in a Division III district championship.

Game scores were 25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 18-25, 15-8.

Senior setter Kim Rossman had 38 assists, nine service points and two aces, and junior libero Allison Insana added 27 digs. VASJ is 19-6; Independence 16-10.

Lake Catholic 3, Geneva 0

Senior middle hitter Chelsey Regovich registered 12 kills as the top-seeded Cougars (19-6) coasted in a Division II district final.

Game scores were 25-19, 25-12, 25-19. Geneva (17-8) was seeded second.

Girls soccer

Hathaway Brown 1, Hawken 0

Sophomore midfielder Kate Dolansky scored off a corner kick rebound from 20 yards in the second half for a Division II district title.

Junior goalkeeper Grace Redmon registered Hathaway Brown's 12th shutout this season, including its third straight in the playoffs.

Walsh Jesuit 3, Solon 0

The Warriors coasted to a Division I district championship behind three first-half goals.

Junior midfielder Elizabeth Bollinger started the scoring with an unassisted goal 10 minutes into the game.

Walsh Jesuit improved to 16-0-2.

Westlake 2, Magnificat 0

The Demons got goals from senior forward Natalie Bechtel and junior forward Kristie Prendergast to claim a Division I district crown.

Junior goalie Stephanie Poeppelman helped Westlake (15-1-3) to its 15th shutout with three saves.

West Geauga 2, Mentor 0

Junior goalie Lauren Kelly logged her sixth shutout in the past seven games for a Division I district championship. Kelly has eight shutouts on the season.

The Wolverines upset 2008 state semifinalist Shaker Heights in a district semifinal Monday.

West Geauga (12-4-3) got goals from senior forward Michelle Anselmo and junior forward Kori Chapic.

Mentor finishes 9-7-3.
