Albany Alexander is a small school from a small town but there is nothing small about its talent. The Spartans proved that Saturday as their volleyball team swept Gates Mills Gilmour Academy in three games at Wright State University's Nutter Center in the Division III state final.
"It's a whole bunch of mixed feelings," Senior Megan McCoy of Alexander said of the victory. "You couldn't ask for anything else...we know it's possible and we finally did it."
Alexander (28-1) dominated the Lancers (27-2) 25-17, 27-25, 25-15 to take home the school's first ever state title in any sport.
McCoy (12 kills, 2 digs and 6 blocks), senior Lauren Raines (23 digs, 3 aces and 1 assist) and sophomore Sarah Radekin (32 assists, 5 digs, 5 blocks and 1 kill) helped lead the Spartans to victory.
Seniors Raysa Sylvester (14 digs, 5 kills, 1 ace and 1 block), Kelsey Rogers (20 assists, 10 digs and 1 block) and Madison Mawby (10 digs, 7 kills, 1 assist and 1 ace) shined for Gilmour.
