Girls Soccer - Avon Lake at Westlake

, October 11, 2012 10:31 p.m.

Westlake secured a share of the Southwestern Conference title with a 6-1 victory over visiting Avon Lake.  Westlake will share the SWC crown with Brecksville as both teams had identical 6-1 conference records.

The Demons who put 21 shots on the Avon Lake goal scored three times in the first half to put the game out of reach early.  Freshman Maya Bauer led off the scoring at the 26:00 minute mark and was followed by junior Lauren Hurst who scored on a breakaway with 7 minutes remaining and fellow junior Madison Dunlap wrapped up the scoring for the first half as she struck a rebound off a blocked shot from Bauer.

The second half was more of the same for Westlake as they scored two goals within a 3 minute span midway through the period. Senior Shannon Kruger scored first off a corner kick from junior Megan Konrad and Lauren Hurst followed with her second goal of the game on a shot from 25 yards out.

Avon Lake was finally able to break through with 11 minutes left as junior Emily O'Connor was taken down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick which she blasted by the Westlake goalie.

Westlake wrapped up the scoring on the night with Madison Dunlap's second goal of the evening.

In goal for the Demons was junior Alexis Carpenter who made 3 saves and was relieved by fellow junior Mackenzie Maynard.  For Avon Lake, junior goalie Amy Crooks was kept busy as she made a career high 15 saves.

With the win, Westlake moves to 8-5-1 on the season with one regular season game remaining.  They will open the OHSAA district playoffs with a game versus Avon on Wednesday 10/17.  Avon Lake drops to 2-8-4 for the year with one game remaining against Hathaway Brown.  The Shoregals will face North Olmsted in the playoffs on 10/17 also.
