Early on, Friday night’s battle of the Bees between Brecksville-Broadview Heights and visiting Medina appeared to have all the makings of a great one.
But Medina’s powerful running attack, combined with a stifling defense, proved too much for Brecksville to handle and Medina rolled to a 42-14 win.
Medina’s Jason Suggs led the pack, rushing for more than 150 yards and scoring three touchdowns on runs of 5, 8 and 62 yards. He also passed for one score, connecting on a 26-yard reverse pass play with Walter Bailey.
Even Medina quarterback Justin Letts got in on the ground game, doing more damage with his feet than his arm. Letts, who also handles his team’s kicking duties, rushed for two scores and kicked all of Medina’s extra-point attempts.
Brecksville did all of its damage in the first half.
Tom Tupa got his Bees off to a quick start, connecting on a 46-yard pass play with Paul Karthan early in the first quarter. Minutes later, running back Matt Galland completed the drive with a 1-yard touchdown rush at 8:56 left in the first. Late in the second, Tupa struck again hitting Galland for a 13-yard score.
But Brecksville would score no more and seemed to lose its edge in the second half.
Unofficially, Tupa finished 15-for-24 with 129 yards and one interception. And, on the bright side, Brecksville captain Adam Best had two sacks.
Brecksville will look to rebound next week with a game against Normandy.
Medina makes a trip to Wadsworth for a showdown with the Grizzlies.
