University School football team looks to finish season at .500 with victory in final game

, October 25, 2012 4:58 p.m.

The University School football team saw its playoff hopes disappear in a 34-19 loss to Chardon Friday in Chardon.

US entered the game having won three straight and still had hopes of a playoff spot, but the Preppers have now been mathematically eliminated. US is 4-5 and 3-3 in the Premier Athletic Conference. The Hilltoppers improved to 7-2, 4-2.

The last game for US is Geneva (3-6, 2-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday at home.

"They're a pretty good team, but I think we match up well," said US coach Jim Stephens. "It's the final home game for our seniors. They're very committed to winning this game."

Geneva is a running team that runs out of the 'I' formation.

Stephens said the Hilltoppers offense is potent.

"It's hard to stop," Stephens said. "They had some long drives.

"When we finally started to stop them in the third quarter, it was too late. In the third and most of the fourth, we held them scoreless. We played much better in the second half."

Offensively, the Preppers had a hard time finishing drives.

"We completed passes," Stephens said. "We were moving the ball, we just didn't score. Our offense didn't have much time on the field. They really kept our offense off the field."
