It finally felt like Fall soccer tonight with the temperature hovering near 50 degrees, occasional sprinkles or mist filling the air, and a playoff game to be settled. The Laurel Gators visited the CVCA Royals in Cuyahoga Falls and came away with a 2-1 victory to advance in their run towards the district title. Coach Tibi Regele was thrilled after the game with the intensity on the field, the total team effort, and the execution of the specific game plan that the girls had worked on the last few days. Outstanding individual efforts were abundant up and down the roster but coach specifically cited Junior Emma Evans playing an entirely new postion, Freshman Sammi Riddle shutting down key players in the middle, and Sophmore Emma Landskroner playing through injury as particulary key efforts. The scoring got started on a perfectly placed corner kick from Captain Mia Mastroianni that was driven home from within the mass of bodies in the box by Veronica Jones. A short time later Senior striker Sydney Riddle took a pass from Mastroianni, broke free from the defenders and drilled the left corner to take Laurel to a 2-0 lead. The Royals came out with heavy pressure for the first 10 minutes of the second half but the Gator defense held strong led by captain Nicole Felice and Junior Michelle DeLaney. CVCA got on the board late in the half on a laser free kick from Senior Katherine Kazoulos after Freshman Toni Costa was fouled just outside the box. The remainder of the game was well-played but the scoring was complete as the Gators finished out the 2-1 victory and now look forward to their next district challenge on Monday vs Chagrin Falls.
