The games between Laurel and Padua high schools have been close now for 3 years with each team claiming wins and only by one goal on each occasion. Therefore it comes as no surprise that this year's rematch was just as close and ended in a 1-1 draw. This game was a tale of two halves. The first half was an even battle with Laurel able to grab the only goal of the half on a Mia Mastroianni pass to Veronica Jones who was able to finish to the delight of the Laurel faithful on the sidelines. The second half was entirely different as Padua came out pushing up defenders and applying signficant offensive pressure that had the Gators on their heels. Midway through the half they were finally able to get a shot past keeper Christina Steele after a bit of defensive miscommunication on the Gator back line. The offensive pressue continued thoughout the half with Padua maintaining possession advantage and boucing some shots off the cross bar but the Laurel defense led by Captain Nicole Felice and Junior Michelle Delaney in the middle as well as Freshman Sammi Riddle and Juniors Kelly Sabransky and Hayley Donohue on the outside bent but did not break in preserving the 1-1 draw. The Gators next challenge will be long time rival Hathaway Brown on Tuesday at Ursline College.
