The Beachwood football team came close to finishing Kirtland's 23-game win streak, but lost in overtime to the Hornets, 20-18.
The loss is a severe blow to the Bison's playoff chances, but Beachwood is not dead yet. The Bison play at 7 p.m. Friday at West Geauga (4-5). The Bison are 10th in Division IV, region 13.
Beachwood coach Ryan Williams said the Bison and Wolverines are similar.
"They definitely like to run the ball," Williams said. "Their quarterback can run the ball. Number 34 (Domenick Varga) runs the ball very hard. Their line is solid. They've got physical kids on defense.
"They're definitely playing their best ball right now, which is good. We want to play teams that are playing well. The last couple of weeks have been playoff games anyway. We're glad to play West G."
Against the Hornets, Corey Jones rushed 24 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed 5 of 10 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown to JulioStevens. Jordan Lane rushed 13 times for 60 yards.
Mike Fields had 12 tackles and a sack, Tyler Hines had 11 tackles and a sack and Noah Mitchell had 10 tackles and a sack.
It was a 12-12 game at the end of regulation. Kirtland got the ball first, scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Beachwood scored a touchdown, but an option run to the right was snuffed out short on the two-point conversion try.
"During the fourth quarter, we discussed what play we would run in that situation," Williams said. "They defended it well. We didn't make it."
Williams was asked if the boys attitude has dropped since the loss.
"They're as confident as ever," Williams said. "That was the best game we've played in six years even though we lost."
