The Laurel Gators overcame and early goal to continue their winning ways against Cleveland Heights on Thursday at the Laurel Butler Campus. The first 20 minutes were a little sluggish for the Gators as they conceded an early goal on a well placed shot just over the head of keeper Christina Steele. As the momentum of the game changed it became clear that the missed shots and outstanding saves couldn't last forever and that Laurel would eventually find the net. The ice was broken near the end of the half when Junior Nicole Felice took one of Sydney Riddle's monster throw-ins and calmly tapped it past the keeper. The Gators came out strong in the second half controlling play and creating multiple chances but struggling to finish. Senior Mia Mastroianni scored on a nice over-the-top ball from Nicole Felice and then later in the half Sydney Riddle converted a Mastroianni pass to make the score 3-1. Midfielders Emma Evans, Emma Landskroner, and Veronica Jones had a major impact in the second half controlling the field in what turned out to be a very physical game. On the negative side for the Gators was the flying elbow to the head of Striker Sydney Riddle near the end of the game resulting in a probable concussion. This and the anticipated return of forward Natalie Kosir from an ankle will have coach Tibi Regele reorganizing the offense as they prepare for Wellington High School next Tuesday at the Butler Campus.
