Tears flowed from the eyes of the Parma Padua Franciscan volleyball team as they were handed the Division II state volleyball championship trophy Saturday.
After defeating Kettering Archbishop Alter (20-9) in four games at the Wright State University's Nutter Center in Dayton, the Bruins (26-3) claimed the school's first ever girls state championship title.
"I'm sure (the win) will sink in on the bus ride home," said senior Meghan Cugliari of Padua. "We knew (the Knights) weren't going to lay down."
Padua won the first two games 25-22, 26-24 and fell in the third 17-25. The Bruins got their momentum back to win Game 4 25-21.
"We tried not to look at the score," Cugliari said. "We just tried to play our game...We knew after (the first) two games we could win the state championship."
Junior Kaitlyn Leary took charge at the net for Padua with 23 kills. She also added 13 digs to the defense and an ace to the scoring. Cugliari added to the victory with 48 assists, 13 digs, 2 kills, 1 block and an ace.
Freshman Megan Courtney was productive for the Alter Knights. She led the team in assists with 27 while contributing 8 kills, 9 digs, 7 blocks and an ace. Senior Annalyse Schmitt (11 kills, 5 assists, 9 digs, 2 blocks and 1 ace) and freshman Kelly Westerkamp (11 kills, 1 block and 6 digs) were also effective for Alter.
